The ancient symbol of Yin and Yang represents the uniting of opposites: the constant and universal truth that opposites are interdependent realities that reinforce one another with their differences. Great art from all cultures has this truth at its heart – opposition between light and dark, warm and cool, melting edges and crisp detail, and central to all is the harmony of opposition between male and female.
From opposite ends of the spectrum the two figures are bound together by their differences and achieve a harmony and balance together that would not be possible independently. The male figure is a concentrated study of strength and latent power, with his torso as the nexus of energy in the piece. The flowing and soft form of the female figure is a counterpoint to the tension in the male form, and the two are entwined in a way that calls to mind the links of a chain: two entities becoming one in balance and harmony.
