Richard MacDonalds Cheetah, Bust reveals an intimate study of Samburu, the two and a half year old Nambian cheetah the artist used as the subject for his Diana and the Coursing Cheetahs series. While much art is created with purpose and intent, Cheetah Bust was created through the process of exploration. There are times when the sole intention is merely to discover what may come of the creative process. As MacDonald states, Sometimes I am just composing with no particular purpose other than to explore the medium, subject, feeling and form. Becoming visually and physically aware of all aspects of his subject by sculpting from life, MacDonald employs texture and patina to realistically depict the tear marks, solid black spots, and mane all qualities which are unique to the African cheetah.
