Moments of perfect balance defy nature, and yet exalt it at the same time: in this paradox Richard MacDonald has found a rich field of inspiration.
Our response to a work of art is a complex reaction, and one that can never be fully analyzed or discovered. Yet, in the mysterious pull we feel towards a particular piece of art, whether it be painting or sculpture, the principle of balance is a primary force. The drama of opposites, and their relation to one another, is at the heart of every art form - we are irresistibly drawn to the exciting, elusive concept of balance. In our quest for balance we struggle against all the forces of nature, internal and external, and when true balance is achieved it is usually for a fleeting instance. This moment of perfection that we seek in all things is a magical moment, and it gives us a profound satisfaction when we see it.

Richard MacDonald shows us figures that are perfect archetypes of balance, with symmetrical form, performing acrobatically or in dance, to make a statement about the mastery that human beings can achieve. It is a balance of mind, body, and spirit reflected in the physical qualities of the sculptures themselves: glorious examples of the balance of form, movement and gravity.
All art dances around this concept of balance - sometimes reflecting it, sometimes defying it. Richard MacDonald does both, sometimes in a single sculpture, and the effect on our psyche is direct and primal. We are creatures of symmetry and balance in a world of constant flux and instability, and it is in the created world of art that we are able to experience the balance we seek.
